As part of the 2009 Louis Braille bicentenary celebrations, the Institute for the Blind recently showcased an exhibition in the Mountain Mill Mall. This exhibition involved orientation and mobility demonstrations, performances by the institute for the blind band and visually impaired artists, as well as a vast display of braille related items and products manufactured by the blind. Mall visitors were both overwhelmed and impressed by the blind Johan Louw's skilful cane weaving abilities and eagerly stopped for a chat. The efficient orientation and mobility skills of the blind, independently finding their way in the mall with their white cane and under strict supervision of their instructor, had passers-by in awe. Thank you to San Diego Spur and Pannarotti's for sponsoring refreshments for the blind participators and thank you to the staff of Mountain Mill Mall for their assistance in the materialisation of this successful event.
