It is very important for the visually impaired to have a thorough knowledge of the activities and techniques of daily living in order to obtain a level of independence and self-reliance.

The Institute for the Blind offers training in orientation and mobility and alternative communication. The visually impaired are taught:

  • How to attain mobility through the use of white canes, guide dogs or sighted guides
  • The skills needed for everyday living e.g. social skills, personal health care, sex education, recreational and vocational skills.
