It was with great excitement that the Information Centre was opened on the 18th of March 2011. This centre is set to change the face of tourism in the Western Cape as Mr Gilfillan, the CEO of Cape Town Routes Unlimited, who attended the affair, said.
The launch was attended by 80 selected guests amongst which were sponsors and dignitaries. Two pianists from the Pioneer school entertained the guests and a combined choir of the Institute for the Blind and the Pioneer School sang 3 items as part of the programme. It was a truly unforgettable event.
The information centre consists of the following: The Eddie van Dijk exhibition centre, containing geological specimens from all over South Africa; the George van Heerden fossil trail, where blind and deafblind as well as sighted persons can have a unique tactile experience; the Blindiana Museum – a museum for the blind about the blind and The Blind Spot – a reception area and theatre which can accommodate persons with all disabilities.
The centre is open from Monday to Thursday from 7:30 to 13:00 and then again from 14:00 to 16:30. On Fridays it is open from 7:30 to 13:30. For more information contact Mrs. Anlo van Heerden from the Institute for the Blind on 0725908655.
