Dinner in the Dark a success
On Saturday, 12 February 2011, the Institute for the Blind, in collaboration with the Pioneer School for the Visually Impaired, arranged a unique dinner in the dark where guests were given the opportunity to (for a moment) experience the environment of a blind person.
On arrival guests stood amazed at the two blind learners who welcomed them into the hall with their faultless piano skills, whereafter the Mistress of Ceremonies, Ms Anlo van Heerden invited guests to their seats to start with the proceedings.
The passionate and entertaining comedian, Marion Holm, added laughter to the evening with her sharp sense of humour. Her dear friend, Johan Pretorius, shared his positive experience of visiting the Institute for the Blind during his desperate search for guidance and advice after being diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa.
After the evenings proceedings, the lights were dimmed and supper was served by candle light. The flames were then extinguished for the anticipated moment … the experience of eating dinner as a blind person.
Guests left the hall with a new appreciation for what is so often taken for granted – sight. The experience will not be forgotten soon by the people who attended.
